So … hi world! I have absolutely no idea what to say in my first post! (I’m so smooth like that.) Just go on over to my About page for more info on me. Anyway, to get serious — I’ve decided that I’m only going to be accepting review requests for diverse books, which means diverse authors and/or diverse character(s).
- I am a pansexual, first-generation Asian-American who currently struggles with depression and ADHD. Reading about your cishet white AF characters simply doesn’t interest me.
- Living in the US as an LGBTQ+ minority, with President Trump’s inauguration nine days away … let’s just say it’s gonna be a scary four years. I don’t need to read about more cishet white people when I’m sure they’ll be dominating the news already.
- Diverse authors need our support! Look, we all know there’s bias in the publishing industry. Cishet white authors have been writing books about cishet white characters for so long that they simply get most of the support. However, we as readers and consumers can change that. When we tell publishers that we aren’t interested in all that crap anymore, we send a message. Together, we can make our voices heard!
To give credit where it’s due, I only decided to do this because of The Bookavid’s post on why she’s resolved to do the same thing. Her blog is actually amazing, by the way; everyone should be reading it!
What about you guys? Will you also pledge to only accept review requests for diverse books? Or even only read diverse books? I’m not quite that hard-core … I don’t think I’ll be able to resist the occasional romance, especially when I’m on my damn period, but more power to you! Whatever your plan is for reading more diverse books in 2017, let me know in the comments below. Can’t wait to hear all about it!
